Scarborough Road Footpath Set for 650-Metre Shared Path Upgrade

Newport bicycle path

A 650-metre stretch of Scarborough Road is in line for a walking and cycling upgrade, with the existing footpath between Griffith Road and Sunnyside Road planned to become a wider shared path.

The project covers the eastern side of Scarborough Road, where the existing footpath would be upgraded to a 2.5-metre-wide shared pathway. Shade-tree planting is also included in the scope, adding another change along a corridor through this part of Scarborough.

Rather than creating a path where none exists, the project would effectively give the existing route a new role. The wider path is intended to accommodate people riding bikes as well as those travelling on foot, providing an off-road option along this section of Scarborough Road.

An Upgrade Years in the Planning

The idea has been sitting within Moreton Bay’s longer-term active transport planning for several years.

Earlier, City of Moreton Bay infrastructure documents identified roughly 658 metres between Griffith and Sunnyside Roads for an upgrade from footpath to shared path. More recent Australian Government project information puts the length at 650 metres and specifies a 2.5-metre shared pathway along the eastern side of the road.

The project has received $225,000 through the Australian Government’s Active Transport Fund, against a published project value of $467,284. Federal project information describes Scarborough Road as a key local corridor and says the upgrade is intended to encourage greater use of active transport.

It has now appeared in City of Moreton Bay’s adopted 2026–27 Budget, with Council including new active travel connections and a pathway along Scarborough Road among the key projects listed for Division 5.

That budget inclusion brings the project back into focus, although it does not mean construction is necessarily about to start.

When Will Scarborough See the New Path?

That is the part of the project that remains less certain. An earlier federal schedule placed the Scarborough Road project in planning and carried construction dates that have since been overtaken.

With the project subsequently appearing in Council’s 2026–27 program, those earlier dates can no longer be treated as a reliable indication of when work will begin. No updated construction start or completion date was identified in the latest material reviewed.

What is much clearer is what residents can eventually expect to see on the ground. The existing footpath between Griffith and Sunnyside Roads would become a wider shared pathway, opening that section of Scarborough Road to cyclists as well as pedestrians without requiring riders to use the traffic lanes.

It would add another piece to Scarborough’s walking and cycling infrastructure away from the suburb’s better-known foreshore routes, where shared paths already provide another option for getting around on foot or by bike.
